How does this production embrace sustainability?: | This project talks about the Commedia dell'Arte and aims not to lose the customs and historical culture of it. It talks about a young Italy, which thinks it is able to face the future by destroying the past and is now disconnected from its own history. It is a journey through the rediscovery of its origins and the deep soul of a people through the eyes of three children who embody the archetypes of the three main characters of this theatrical form (“Arlecchino, Pulcinella and Colombina”-called in the most archaic culture Palummella). It is a magical and experimental musical. |
Synopsis: | Ino (13 years old) and Nello (11 years old) are at the river. Ino plays with a lighter, gets burned, but continues to be fascinated by the flame. Suddenly the two hear the voice of Palummella (12 years old) coming from the woods; they go looking for her, going deep into the vegetation. Thus they discover a stage and find the little girl dancing holding the masks of two Commedia dell'Arte characters, Arlecchino and Pulcinella. Palummella invites the two to take part in his show. Nello decides to go on stage and wear Pulcinella's mask while Ino teases her, calling what he is doing “stupid.” Palummella kicks him out of the theater, Ino forces his brother to leave with him, but Nello refuses and Ino leaves alone. During sunset, Ino nervously plays with his lighter. He hears Nello's voice and when he sees him wearing Pulcinella's mask tries to take it off him, unsuccessfully. Ino then grabs the lighter and runs toward the woods. Nello tries to stop him, but fails. Ino burns Palummella's stage, while Nello runs for help. Ino is enveloped in smoke, but just before he falls unconscious he is rescued by Palummella. When Ino opens his eyes it is night and the theater is reduced to ashes. Palummella is sitting on the rubble; she clutches Arlecchino's mask in her hands and looks at it. She looks up at Ino, who lowers his head. Palummella leaves the Arlecchino mask on the ashes of the stage and walks away. Ino looks at the mask and cleans it. The next morning Ino manages to make peace with his brother, convincing both Nello and Palummella to trust him. Ino hands him bandages, Nello and Palummella put them on, and Ino leads them to the rubble site. When Palummella and Nello take off the bandages they discover that Ino is wearing the mask of Arlecchino. Ino begins to sing a song, dancing and demonstrating the rebirth of the theater. Palummella and Nello join the party, ending it all with a hug. |
